Welcome to part 2 of how to protect your car this 2022 summer season. If you have missed the first part of this blog, covering some of the best ways to ensure your car’s tip-top shape during the hottest months, you can find it here.
When exposed to sunlight, the sun’s ultraviolet rays can quickly deteriorate and oxidise your vehicles exterior paintwork and internal components. According to The AA and an article by The Sunday Times, the sun’s energy creates a greenhouse effect, that causes solid objects such as the dashboard and seats to heat up.
The articles also identify that the outside temperature on a hot sunny day can double internally in a matter of minutes, so ensure your children or pets in the car are well taken care of.
Park in shade – This is one of the best ways of protection inside and out. Avoiding sunlight helps keep your dashboard or leather seats from drying and cracking. If you have parked in a safe area at home, open the windows slightly to allow fresh air to lower the internal temperature.
Windshield Cover/Sun Shades – Windshields are subject to a lot of elements all year round. In winter, windshield covers can be used to protect cars from frost and snow, but in summer they can also be used to block sunlight. The re-direction of sunlight helps to mitigate heat and UV damage.
Sunshades or sun visors help to protect and shield your car’s interior from sun damage. They are regarded as one the best forms of protection for the passengers but, also a fantastic way of prolonging your vehicle’s electronics and keeping the car cool.
Dashboard & Steering Wheel Cover – Although it will not cool your car down, using a cover is a good way of preventing the car’s dashboard and steering wheel from heating up. Dash and steering wheel covers protect the original material from wearing off. The reduction of heat also helps to ensure you can firmly hold the steering wheel without burning your hands. These covers reduce glare on the dash while blocking off dirt, dust, and scratches.
The summer’s heat also makes cars very susceptible to a build-up of harmful fumes and bacteria without you knowing, particularly in your air vents. If cleaning your exterior is important, the same can be said for the inside too.
