HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CAR THIS SUMMER SEASON - PART 1!

Would you like to know how to keep your car in tip top shape this summer season? (4 minute read)

Welcome to our two-part guide on how to protect your car this 2022 summer season.

Like people, our cars need a little protecting from the sun as well. Statistics from AXA Insurance and Swiftcover breakdown reported that cars are 50% more likely to overheat, causing major problems such as tyre punctures, clutch wear and tear, and gearbox problems during the summer season.

We have compiled a list of the best ways to protect your pride and joy. Covering proper maintenance and care for the best defense against the sun. Click Part 2 if you would like to read the second part of this blog.

1. Wash Your Car Regularly

Washing your car is one of the best ways of protection from the harsh elements of the sun. Intense heat, direct sunlight, bugs, mud, and bird mess can wear the paint and cause fading on your vehicle. Which, unfortunately, prematurely ages the car over a short period of time. We recommend washing your car at least twice a week to keep it in a good condition and avoid any costly paintwork. Keeping your car clean also helps pollen allergy sufferers out there.

2. Regularly Check Your Fluids

It’s vital to regularly check the fluids in your car at least once a month to ensure they are at a sufficient level for your vehicle to run smoothly. The three most important checks to keep on top of includes the motor oil, power steering fluid, and brake fluid. High temperatures can be very dangerous and quickly evaporate your cars fluids, leading to breakdowns or any major problems in the later future.

Important fluid checks explained:

  • Brake fluid – Brake fluid give your brakes the power they need to effectively stop your vehicle when necessary. Over time brake fluid collects moisture and needs to be replaced to avoid your vehicles brake reaction time becoming very slow which can cause major issues for yourself or other motorists.
  • Motor oil– Petrol and Diesel cars need motor oil fluid to protect, cool and lubricate your car’s engine. To ensure your car’s healthy life, motor oil needs to be changed on a regular basis.
  • Power steering fluid – This is part of your vehicle’s hydraulic system. It gives you the ability to turn your steering wheel easily and smoothly. The older the vehicle, the higher the chance your hydraulic system will start to collect dust and debris. If you feel like your steering is very heavy and not as responsive as it should be, flush and replace the power steering fluid immediately.

Always get a professional to help if you are unable to or have no where to throw your old fluid. Old fluid can cause damage to the environment and wildlife.

The last part of this section is to check your vehicles engine coolant. In summer, the heat forces your car to work extra hard, but the coolant helps by preventing it. Coolant is sometimes referred to as ‘Antifreeze’ which is mixed with water to keep your radiator from freezing in cold weather and overheating in hotter weather. Your owner’s manual should show you how to flush and replace the fluid if you feel there is a problem. Otherwise, contact our Service Team who are happy to help do all the checks necessary, so you do not have to.
